The Aqua fitness program that Celtic Leisure follow is based on health and skill related components of fitness including muscular endurance, cardiovascular fitness, flexibility, co-ordination, power and improvements in body composition. A range of exercises are conducted in several depths of water with a different levels of speed, co-ordination and ranges/direction of movement. Aqua Fitness is also largely based upon “functional exercises" encouraging movements that are found in every day life, eg climbing stairs, running, cycling, jumping and changing of direction while in motion. On occasion, some Aqua Fitness classes can contain corrective exercises to improve posture and muscle imbalances.
In addition to the standard benefits of any exercise, the use of aerobic type exercises in water provides support for the body and reduces the risk of muscle or joint injury. The mitigation of gravity by buoyancy/flotation places less stress on the joints when training and stretching, and can allow a greater range of motion through the joints. Exercise in water can also prevent overheating through continuous cooling of the body and you do not even have to be a strong swimmer to participate in water aerobics.
Very light hand weights are often included in this water work out to assist in the toning of the upper body and arms.
