Castell Carreg Cennen Circular
About
Perched atop a Carboniferous limestone outcrop, Carreg Cennen Castle, dating back to the late 13th century, overlooks the River Cennen at the western end of Bannau Brycheiniog National Park (Brecon Beacons).
What remains today are the awe-inspiring ruins of what was once a formidable stronghold. The rock formation it rests upon is designated as a Geological Site of Special Scientific Interest and the castle itself is a grade 1 listed building.
Start this trail from Carreg Cennen car park and head over the hill. Here, you could detour to visit the castle ruins before descending into the valley, passing through a Local Nature Reserve woodland. Follow the road through the valley and around the hill to return to the car park.
Dogs are welcome, but keep in mind that you’re likely to encounter free-roaming sheep, so leads are needed. Make sure to check the castle’s opening times before setting out.
