Carn Goch Iron Age Hill Fort
About
This is a short, fascinating walk to the Carn Goch Hill Fort, majestically perched atop a hill, its presence commanding the surrounding countryside within Bannau Brycheiniog National Park (Brecon Beacons). This trail allows you to traverse the hill fort, with its massive stone defences and excellent views of the surrounding hills.
The collective fortifications of Y Gaer Fawr and Y Gaer Fach make up the largest Iron Age hill fort in South Wales. There are several Bronze Age burial mounds and other remnants found on the hill and upright stones mark the entrances
Start at the Garn Goch Visitors car park and follow the footpath leading to Y Gaer Fach, the smaller fort.
Navigate the steep and rugged track until you arrive at the first stone ramparts. This location boasts two hill forts, Y Gaer Fach and Y Gaer Fawr, occupying separate summits on the same elongated ridge. Be mindful that the ground can be uneven with loose stones that shift beneath your feet, so take care.
Traverse both forts and then return the way you came.
