The Carmarthen Fans and Llyn y Fan Fach Circular
About
This trail takes you up the Carmarthen Fans in Y Mynydd Du (Black Mountain) range in Bannau Brycheiniog National Park (Brecon Beacons), visiting the peaks of Waun Lefrith, Bannau Sir Gaer, Fan Foel, and Fan Brycheiniog. This area boasts breathtaking views, serene lakes, majestic mountains, and abundant wildlife.
The trail starts from the Fforest Fawr car park, where you head west along the base of the mountain, before embarking on the mostly steady ascent up the ridge on the west side of Llyn-y-Fan Fach to Waun Lefrith.
It involves a couple of steep sections, but after this first summit, the gradient eases as you continue along the Carmarthenshire ridge path to Bannau Sir Gaer.
Once you reach the top, the panoramic views are incredible, making the climb well worth it. On a clear day, you can see across Bannau Brycheiniog to all the major peaks, including Pen y Fan.
Prepare for a steep descent to the col, where a river crossing awaits, before embarking on another uphill section, turning northwards towards Fan Foel. This particular point along the ridge sticks out, offering brilliant views of the dramatic escarpment that characterises the area.
Follow the ridge southeast towards Fan Brycheiniog where you’ll have a wonderful view down Llyn y Fan Fawr below before beginning the descent by heading back to the col adjacent to Bannau Sir Gaer and heading down the slope of the escarpment to Llyn y Fan Fach, which according to Welsh folklore is said to be inhabited by the Lady of the Lake.
Take a moment to savour the tranquillity of the lake, strolling along its banks before continuing the descent along the gravel path back to the car park.
Dogs are welcome, but keep in mind that you're likely to encounter free-roaming sheep, so leads are advised.
