Usk Reservoir Circular

About

Situated below the majestic Black Mountain at the western edge of Bannau Brycheiniog National Park (Brecon Beacons), you’ll find Usk Reservoir. Encircled by Glasfynnyd Forest, the paths along the waterside are well-maintained, clearly waymarked, and suitable for both walking and cycling.

This is a fairly easy walk taking you all the way around the reservoir and offering breathtaking vistas of the shimmering water, complemented by the majestic backdrop of the Black Mountains.

Start this trail from the car park situated at the southeastern tip of the reservoir. Cross the River Usk and venture northward, following the shoreline of Usk Reservoir.

After tracing the northern bend, continue on the gravel path, passing through a gate and continuing through Glasfynydd Forest, which borders the reservoir.

The trail has a delightful mix of woodland and open pathways along the waterside. Enjoy the sweeping views of the glistening water from the northern banks with the Black Mountain range behind it.

Prepare for a couple of short climbs along the route, which reward you with incredible views from a slightly higher vantage point

You’ll cross the Afon Sgio at the western end of the reservoir via a small footbridge and begin heading back along the southern side.

As you meander along the path, it veers away from the reservoir, continuing through the woodland and crossing the River Usk. Eventually, the trail will guide you back to the car park, tracing the waterside once more.

It is a popular place to visit any time of year and this trail is well-suited for families and dogs.
