Carreg Goch and Crash Site Wellington MF509 Circular
About
This trail leads you lo the Wellington Bomber MF509 crash site in the Black Mountains region in Bannau Brycheiniog National Park (Brecon Beacons).
This trail starts at Dan-Yr-Ogof Farm along the A4067. Pass through the gate and begin the climb up the hill, taking in the wonderful views of Tawe Valley along the way. As you head west, the gradient gradually eases, and you'll encounter a cave called Pwll Dwfn as you make your way towards the summit.
On the plateau, you'll come across a couple of small lakes before reaching the Canadian Bomber crash site.
Wellington MF509 crashed in 1944 due to engine problems that forced them into clouds, causing ice to accumulate on the wings.
At the crash site, a memorial cairn stands, bearing the names of those who tragically lost their lives. The wreckage, including the bomber wings and main body, remains visible and recognisable.
Continue north to Diswylfa before approaching the summit from the northern side. Ascend to the rocky summit of Carreg Goch, where you'll be rewarded with breathtaking panoramic views. After taking in the sights, begin your descent across the moorland.
Please note that at times, the route may be challenging to discern as it follows smaller tracks, so it is advisable to download the map beforehand.
Appropriate footwear is needed, as the trail involves some rocky terrain and can get slippery in wet weather.
Dogs are welcome, but keep in mind that you’re likely to encounter free-roaming sheep and ponies, so leads are advised.
