Margam Country Park: Mountain Bike Trail

About

Margam Country Park is an excellent place to visit, offering several waymarked walking, mountain biking, and family-cycle routes. It encompasses 1000 acres of parkland set around a Tudor Gothic Mansion, which is a Grade I listed building built between 1830 and 1840.

The park includes gardens, an 18th-century orangery, a narrow gauge railway, and a children’s play area, with a cafe, gift shop and toilet facilities at the visitor centre.

The Mountain Bike Trail is one of the two wayward family cycle trails through the park, with this being the more challenging of the two as, in addition to the gravel and paved paths, it also involves an ascent halfway up the hill.

Follow the yellow waymarkers for this trail, which leads you from the visitor centre by Margam Castle and past New Pond and the Narrow Gauge Railway. Continue past the Discovery Centre and Furzemill Pond before reaching the edge of the park. As you pass the other side of Furzemill Pond, this route splits from the Family Bike Trail and leads you up the hillside before descending along the plantations to return to the trailhead.

There is also plenty of wildlife to be spotted, such as squirrels, foxes, hares, and several herds of deer that call this place home, including fallow, red, Pere David Deer, and the Margam Deer Herd.
