Sialens Coegnant (Coegnant Challenge)

This is a lovely trail up along the slopes of Mynydd Bach overlooking Maesteg. For this trail, you’ll first follow the purple waymarkers for the Gilli Deg (Fair Grove) route, which leads you uphill along a forest track, passing the Keeper of the Collieries Sculpture, which stands atop the site of the former Coegnant Colliery and Maestef Washery. It was built out of oak and depicts a miner.

Continue along a section of the North’s Navigation Railway as you pass Nanyffyllon and then follow the red waymarkers up the hill before retracing your steps back down to Maesteg, where there are plenty of places to get some refreshments afterwards.

The trail involves some steep sections and areas that may be muddy at times, so come prepared with the appropriate footwear.
