Dinas Island Circular

About

This is a stunning coastal trail around Dinas Island in Pembrokeshire Coast National Park, which despite its name, is actually a peninsula, offering breathtaking views of the water, rugged sea cliffs and beautiful bays.

There is a wonderful array of wildflowers and wildlife to discover along this trail, and this area is particularly enjoyable for birdwatching, with numerous birds flocking to these shores.

The trail starts by Pwllgwaelod Bay, where there is also a pub to reward weary walkers with some well-deserved refreshments afterwards. Initially, you'll follow a short section along the road heading north. However, as the road bends, veer away from the paved section and continue along the path that hugs the coastline.

While the trail itself isn't physically demanding, it does include steps and some steep sections, some of which may be precarious along the sea cliffs, so this route is not advised for young children.

As you make your way uphill, take in the breathtaking views of the beautiful bays leading to Dinas Head. From this highest point, you’ll be able to see Newport on a clear day and enjoy a nice view of the Preseli Hills further inland.

Follow on the grassy tracks along the eastern coastline, heading downhill to Traeth Mawr and Cwm-yr-Eglwys, where you’ll visit the remnants of the church that was destroyed by a storm in 1859. This was known as the Royal Charter Storm, in which numerous ships along Britain’s Coast were lost.

Follow the path inland along the edge of a small woodland to return to the car park. It’s worth noting that some sections of this trail may be narrow and slippery, especially after rain, so make sure to come with the appropriate footwear.
