Whitesands Bay and St. Davids Head Circular

About

Enjoy this stunning coastal trail in Pembrokeshire Coast National Park, visiting Whitesands Beach, St. David’s Head, and heading around Carn Llidl. This route offers superb views of the rugged sea cliffs, provides an abundance of wildlife and wildflowers, and takes in several interesting archaeological sites. The paths are well marked and include some hilly parts, but nothing too strenuous.

The trail starts from the car park at Whitesands Beach, where there is also a small cafe to get some refreshments. There are some great opportunities for water sports, with this being a particularly popular spot for surfing. Please note that dogs are not allowed on the beach between May and October.

Set off from the car park by following the coastal path to the first viewpoint along a narrow peninsula, where you’re treated to a fantastic view of the beautiful Whitesands Beach and Port Mawr.

Retrace your steps to rejoin the coastal path, continuing north, passing several bays before reaching Penmaen Dewi (St David’s Head). This rocky promontory offers spectacular views across the water and coastal bays.

You’ll find the Clawdd y Milwyr (the Warrior's Dyke) along the narrowest part of St. David’s Head. Continue towards the tip of St. David’s Head, where you’ll encounter the remnants of hut circles on the rocky outcrop.

Following the path along the northern shoreline, you’ll encounter Coetan Arthur Dolmen (Arthur’s Quoit), the remnants of a Neolithic burial Chamber.

Meander along the coastal cliffs, taking in the breathtaking views and watching for seals before turning inland to slowly make your way back to the car park.

You’ll head around Carn Llidi, the hill that overlooks St. David’s Head and Whitesands Bay. Those interested could detour and head up to the top of the hill to bask in the panoramic views from its peak. Along its western slopes are remnants of an Iron Age enclosure and the Carn Llidi Chambered Tomb.

Arriving back at the Whitesands Bay car park, you’ll find a memorial for the US Air Force aircraft that crashed into Carn Llidi during World War Two.
